Regional agenda

Posted in | »

Musicians perform at 2006 Ingenuity FestivalArtists are often solitary creators, but the arts community in Northeast Ohio has been coming together in recent years to assert its importance. Much of the activism has centered on making an economic case for arts and culture. Beyond that, what is our strategy for enlivening the region with art? How can art be an integral part of livable communties? How can it help us tell our story?

To paraphrase economist Richard Florida’s theory from “Rise of the Creative Class” artists flock to cities with the right mix of a liberal culture, a vibrant street life and cheap, big spaces for making art or staging performances. By most measures, Cleveland should be a boom town for artists, and in some neighborhoods like Tremont, Archwood-Denison, the Quadrangle and Collinwood, artists have clustered, and galleries or art collectives have followed.

But, for all of our vacant warehouses and storefronts, world-class institutions like the Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art, well-respected outfits like Cleveland Public Theater and hipster outposts like the Beachland Ballroom, has Cleveland effectively promoted itself outside the region as a destination for artists?

We're asking local artists or “creative types” to think about a regional agenda for the arts in Northeast Ohio. Specifically, what can we do better as a city, as a region, to attract and retain artists?

What follows is the beginning of a list of ideas that Northeast Ohio can capitalize on right now to promote itself and become more attractive to artists. Take a moment to add your own.

Arts

Parade the CircleThe arts challenge us—open our eyes to new possibilities and new worlds. In a region undergoing transformation, the arts force us to confront the tired, old ways, expose the ugliness, and inspire us to envision a better future. We hunger for inspiration, to be touched by higher truths. We want to tell our stories, sing our songs. We need festivals, happenings, dancing in the streets. For us, a sustainable community has poetry, elegance, and joy. It has a beautiful soul.

Be a Green Patriot

Green Patriots poster by Michael Bierut on Cleveland's RTA bussesDuring the Second World War, conservation at home was more than a virtue, it was a crucial act that every American man, woman and child was asked to make in their daily lives. Saving every last scrap of metal, paper, even grease from frying pans for the good of the troops abroad was embedded in every move you made.

A brilliant series of posters sold the American public on quickly mobilizing around actions like “Plant a Victory Garden”, “Is your trip necessary?” or, emblazoned above an image of a war-weary soldier, “Have you really tried to save gas by getting into a car club?”

The fight against manmade global warming demands a similar mobilization campaign. On July 4th, 40 busses hit the streets of Cleveland with banners designed by Michael Bierut. They are asking people to enlist as a Green Patriot by using mass transit, advocating for green jobs, and changing their daily habits–right now–to improve our chances for survival. The Cleveland posters are a pilot for a nationwide Green Patriot campaign.

This Thursday at 10:30 a.m., join a local group of Green Patriots mustering at Public Square to ride RTA buses and spread the message while building support. You can also go online, sign a petition to fight global warming and create green jobs, figure out ways to tweak your actions to be more green, and view the WWII-era posters that inspired Green Patriots.

MTV spotlights local green zine

Lora DiFranco, founder of Green Light One of GCBL’s dedicated interns, Lora DiFranco, is featured in an interview on MTV’s social activism site think.mtv.com. Lora publishes a “zine” (a homemade magazine) for young people interested in becoming active in sustainability. It features tips on how to reduce your environmental impact, do-it-yourself projects, art, and personal stories written by high school and college students in Northeast Ohio.

After talking to teens, Lora found that many feel powerless to affect change at school or in their communities. GreenLight’s articles and events all aim to show young people that they already possess many of the skills needed to make a positive difference in their communities.

"GreenLight is a way for young people to express creativity and have fun while educating themselves and making change," says Lora.

The Willoughby Hills native takes advantage of the strong local music community to reach people that might be interested in environmental issues. “As a newcomer to Cleveland’s local punk scene, I’ve been blown away by the impact that music can have on young people. Music gives people a sense of community, and this is my vision for GreenLight, too.”

When thinking about other forms of media that are available to this age group regarding environmental issues, the Internet is the first thing that comes to mind. However, by printing a zine and having a physical final product, Lora hopes that GreenLight will be more present in the lives of readers. It’s also exciting for young contributors to see their writing and art published in the zine, leading to a more invested and dedicated group of contributing youth.
