Windermere Renaissance is sponsoring the East Cleveland Theater's production of August Wilson's "King Hedley II" to support building a green, sustainable home in East Cleveland.

 "King Hedley II" is the 8th work in Wilson's 10-play cycle chronicling the history of the African-American experience in each decade of the 20th century. It's set in 1985 and tells the story of an ex-con in post-Reagan Pittsburgh trying to rebuild his life. Many critics have hailed the work as a haunting and challenging tragedy of Shakespearean proportions.

August Wilson is arguably the most influential and successful modern African-American playwright. He is the two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Fences, The Piano Lesson, King Hedley II, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Seven Guitars, Two Trains Running, and Radio Golf.

Tickets are $25 for general admission and $100 for VIP.

VIP reception at 2:00 p.m.

Show at 3:00 p.m.

The new era of green infrastructure

Natural stream corridor of Doan BrookIt's not often that public officials get to do something truly transformational for Greater Cleveland. The board members of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) did so on Jan. 7 as they voted to approve the creation of a new stormwater program.

This program is one of the most important developments for local water quality that I have seen in the past 25 years. At last we will have an agency with professional staff and construction budget to deal with stormwater on a watershed basis. We will be able to make real progress on the region’s most serious remaining water quality problems, getting to the root of problems instead of sending them downstream.

This program can be our green infrastructure agency. It can help our region become a leader in retrofitting the urban landscape to reduce stormwater runoff and restore ecological functioning. This is one of our best opportunities for creating the green city on a blue lake that we all dream about.

Capacity to redesign the urban landscape

The NEORSD stormwater program was just one of the big organizational capacity additions in the past year that will allow Greater Cleveland to rethink the urban landscape. The second was the creation of the Cuyahoga County Land Bank, which provides new legal and financial capacity for acquiring and accelerating the reuse of vacant properties.

Northeast Ohio Chapter of the USGBC's quarterly social networking sessions continue to be a big hit.  Inviting all green building practitioners, advocates and Chapter members to another local business - Prosperity Social Club  in Tremont.

The wood burning fire stove and outstanding happy hour deals (cheeseburgers are $5 on Tuesdays!) at Prosperity should be incentive enough to get you out in winter. But you'll also have an opportunity to interface with a wide range of built environment professionals. Bring lots of business cards.

There is no cost to attend this event. Registration strongly encouraged (so we can adequately staff the bar and make you a nametag) at www.neogreenbuilding.org.

"Going green." Everybody's talking about it, but what does it mean for those of us who love and live in older homes? Surprisingly, there are some pretty easy ways to be eco-friendly, respect the architectural character of your house, and save yourself some hard-earned money at the same time.

Come to the Sarah Benedict House, home of the Cleveland Restoration Society, to hear Jamie Bertram, one of CRS's expert staff members, discuss the basics of "greening" your older house. Some of the topics that Jamie will discuss include:

  • why your house is inherently green;
  • energy audits;
  • common contributors of energy loss;
  • cost effective remedies that are also sensitive to historic homes; new green technologies available to homeowners;
  • and tips on sustainable living.
