The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol

"The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol) is the most widely used international accounting tool for government and business leaders to understand, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. The GHG Protocol, a decade-long partnership between the World Resources Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, is working with businesses, governments, and environmental groups around the world to build a new generation of credible and effective programs for tackling climate change."

The Carbon Disclosure Project

“The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent not-for-profit organization aiming to create a lasting relationship between shareholders and corporations regarding the implications for shareholder value and commercial operations presented by climate change. Its goal is to facilitate a dialogue, supported by quality information, from which a rational response to climate change will emerge."

The Climate Registry

“The Climate Registry is a nonprofit partnership developing an accurate, complete, consistent and transparent greenhouse gas emissions measurement protocol that is capable of supporting voluntary and mandatory greenhouse gas emission reporting policies for its Members and Reporters. It will provide a verified set of greenhouse gas emissions data from its Reporters supported by a robust accounting and verification infrastructure.”

A multi-faceted, interdisciplinary topic, sustainability seeks to identify effective ways in which society can transform itself for the future of humanity and the natural world in which we live– its environmental, political, social, cultural, ethical, technological, and economic dimensions. This two-day symposium provides an opportunity for B-W to further delve into the theme of sustainability and the specific challenges facing Northeast Ohio.

The keynote address on Oct. 20 will be by Stuart Hart. A leading authority on the implications of sustainable development and environmentalism for business strategy, Hart is the Samuel C. Johnson Chair of Sustainable Global Enterprise and Professor of Management at Cornell University. His book, Capitalism at the Crossroads, is in its second edition with a new foreword by Al Gore. Dr. Hart believes environmental meltdown and a widening gap between rich and poor pose challenges for global capitalism. He maintains that corporations' technology, resources, capacity and global research can accelerate transformation.

Events are free and open to the public. Agenda details here.

Green jobs

Submitted by David Beach on August 4, 2008 - 9:54pm.

“Green jobs" is a broad descriptor for occupations created to conserve resources and make human activity more environmentally sustainable — jobs range from manufacturing wind turbines to developing fuel cells, deconstructing buildings and managing recycling to growing urban farms or coordinating sustainability practices at a business. In Northeast Ohio, efforts to create green jobs have focused primarily on opportunities in the advanced energy sector, but a broad agenda for regional sustainability could create green jobs in every area of our economy.

Energy opportunities

Two major studies, the McKinsey & Co. report, "Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions: How Much at What Cost?" (2007), and the Political Economy Research Institute report, "Job Opportunities for the Green Economy" (2008), identify clusters of approaches for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing sustainability:

  • Improving energy efficiency in buildings and appliances
  • Increasing fuel efficiency in vehicles
  • Improving mass transit efficiency and infrastructure
  • Reducing carbon intensity of fuels
  • Improving efficiency in energy-intensive industrial production
  • Expanding and enhancing carbon sinks
  • Managing carbon markets
  • Reducing the carbon intensity of electrical power production
  • Expanding use of renewable energy technology

All of these clusters of activity will demand additional human capital in public, private and non-profit sectors.

How many jobs can Ohio expect to gain?

What needs to be done and how do we work together to create the possibilities? Is there a group BHAG that will inspire our work? Local Food for all our families? Lowest energy bills in the nation? A swim-able Cuyahoga River? What types of businesses would we create to make this happen? What resources do we need to make this happen?
