The World Peace Diet Lecture with Dr. Will Tuttle
Friday, September 5, 2008

Join Mercy For Animals for an informative lecture by Dr. Will Tuttle, who will present the main ideas in his groundbreaking and provocative book, The World Peace Diet. It is the first book to make explicit the invisible connections between our meals and our broad range of problems -- psychological, social, and spiritual, as well as health and environmental.

Dr. Tuttle offers powerful ways we can all experience healing and peace and contribute to a positive transformation of human consciousness.

Vegan snacks will be provided.

Where:     Cleveland Heights Library, 2345 Lee Rd. Cleveland Hts OH
When:       6:00 p.m. vegan snacks,  6:30 p.m. lecture begins

"Use The World Peace Diet as a guide to empower yourselves and others in making dietary choices that are powerful beyond what you can possibly imagine."  Julia Butterfly Hill, environmental activist and founder, Circle Of Life Foundation

"The World Peace Diet is one of the most provocative books I've ever read. This is a deep book, aglow with insights that penetrate and expose the complacency of a culture that has strayed painfully far from compassion."        John Robbins, noted author

"Will Tuttle brings a priceless perspective -- not only to the planetary crisis confronting us all, but also to powerful ways we each can affect it. This book is radiant with his learning and his compassion."      Dr. Joanna Macy, author, Coming Back To Life

"I am grateful for this powerful and cogent book. It has stretched my thinking (and heart) about animals, compassion, and our society."   John Mackey, founder, Whole Foods, Inc.

Cyclist using bike lane on Euclid AvenueEuropean countries excel at bicycling thanks to strong policies, lots of investment, and a real commitment to replace cars with bikes, John Pucher and Ralph Bueler of Rutgers University report.

Berlin alone has built up its bike network to include 534 miles of completely separate bike paths, 37 miles of bike lanes on streets, 31 miles of bike lanes on sidewalks, and 62 miles of pedestrian/bike paths.

How does Cleveland compare to the world’s best bicycling cities?

The city’s 2010 Active Transportation Plan, which states the case for Cleveland to be in the next round of federal funding for non-motorized transportation projects, is aiming for a 180-mile bike network, including 30 miles of off-road paths and seven miles of bike lanes that exist today (the longest of which is the 3.5 mile bike lane on Euclid Avenue). The biggest chunk of the Cleveland bikeway is a proposed 99 miles of on-road bike routes, bike lanes and Sharrows, which are used to show motorists that cyclists may “take the lane” and it helps show cyclists good lane positioning, especially where lanes are too narrow to share safely.

land converted to urban gardenWhat's your idea for reusing vacant land in Cleveland?

Neighborhood Progress, Inc. is working with the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio on strategies to put vacant land in Cleveland back into productive use. They held a charrette in May where planners pinpointed ideas—from test plots of plants that remove Lead from soil, an urban tree nursery, or growing food—for further exploration.

Beyond Pesticides Ohio

Beyond Pesticides Ohio seeks to protect the public, in particular the most vulnerable (children and the chemically sensitive), by promoting safe and effective alternatives to the use of toxic chemicals. A special focus is the promotion of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods in schools.

The group won a significant victory recently by convincing the State of Ohio to legislate that all Ohio schools, public and private, be required to adopt safer IPM pest control policies as part of amendments to Jarod's Law. According to BPO executive director Barry Zucker, "Our Pesticide Alternatives for Safer Schools project (PASS) played the lead role in assuring that a strong, clear definition of IPM was adopted. Despite heavy lobbying from a powerful segment of the pesticide industry to resend the IPM requirement, we were able to push back and preserve this school IPM mandate."

Followup to Cleveland Bicycle Week -- Who are NE Ohio Riders and What Do They Want?

During Cleveland Bicycle Week in May, organizers gathered information from area cyclists, learning what works, what doesn't and what people like about cycling in Northeast Ohio.

Here are some of their thoughts:

Fix the Roads!!: Cyclists care about good roads. No surprise there. Cyclists have historically cared about transportation, starting the "good roads" movement before there were cars. As we proceed through the 21st century, remember that in the 19th century, cyclists initiated the call for quality roads to serve the economy and population of a growing nation. So let's fix the potholes, clear the debris and glass that plague motorists and cyclists alike.

Who Rides?: Cyclists have a variety of goals, but the most frequent riders are commuters and those riding for recreation, health and fitness. The next largest groups were those on social visits and errands. People ride for their individual goals, but also, ride as a social activity. Cycling helps individuals and families have fun and enjoy the area's beautiful parks.

We Don't Fret About Motorists: Yes, many motorists don't seem to be aware of traffic laws that establish a cyclist right to use the roads, but it's a diversion to cite barriers between cyclists and motorists, at least from the cyclists point of view. Cyclists report they would ride more with safer bike lanes (82%), areas free from glass, debris and car doors, about 45% more than those who criticized motorists. Weather and poor road quality were cited by more than half of respondents, far more than those citing unsafe motorists.
