Green Building: Retrofit Update

On July 8, the Retrofit section of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Green Building Working Group met for their monthly meeting.  Attached are the minutes, and what follows is a summary of the event.

At the start of the meeting, Holly Harlan from Enterpreneurs 4 Sustainability (E4S)presented the group with the opportunity to highlight our work at the next E4S 3rd Tuesday event. Harlan explained to the group how these events worked and helped brainstorm how we might make our agenda the focus of E4S’s August 17 event.  Holly ran us through several approaches that have been used in the past.  The group agreed that it would be helpful to our work to participate in this session - a small group volunteered to work with Holly on the particular structure and content.

Green Building: Retrofit Work Group Update

The Green Building: Retrofit Working Group (“Group”) held their monthly meeting on June 10. The Group is in the process of developing a plan (“Plan”) to provide energy efficiency retrofits for the entire building stock of the City of Cleveland.  The goal is to have the Plan finished and ready to present to Mayor Frank Jackson and other interested parties by the 2010 Sustainability Summit.

The meeting began with a report from Loree Soggs and Paul Ettore regarding their trip to Washington D.C. as part of the City’s contingency to the Climate Leadership Academy. The conference was attended by many higher-level officials from a large number of American cities. From their perspective, Cleveland is a bit behind the curve in getting retrofit programs up and running. Although the City of Cleveland, in conjunction with Cleveland Housing Network and other providers, has been doing retrofits of homes for many years, there is currently no comprehensive city-wide program.

The Green Building: Retrofit Working Group (“Group”) held their monthly meeting on May 13.

The meeting started with updates from Nicole Stika from the Council of Smaller Enterprises (COSE) concerning Ohio Senate Bill 221. The bill, which was passed last summer, mandates that Ohio electric utilities themselves mandate energy consumption and use renewable sources. While most utility companies in Ohio are meeting this requirement through a rider on customer’s bills, COSE has been working with the FirstEnergy Corporation to assist the company in meeting these requirements through the development of rebate and incentive programs.

Next, Mark McDermott, co-chair of the Group and Vice President of Enterprise Community Partners, presented updates from the Working’s Groups Goals Committee. In particular, McDermott posed questions to the group concerning the desirability of a variety of goals – such as climate change-related (i.e. CO2 emissions), wealth creation, and job creation.
