1.12.09: More riding transit in Northeast Ohio

  • For a record sixth consecutive year, the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) saw a jump in its ridership numbers. Leading the way were riders on the Euclid Avenue HealthLine which increased 46 percent over a year ago, when it was known as #6 bus.

    “We know that a lot of new riders turned to RTA when gas prices were high. Apparently, they stuck with us when gas prices returned a five-year low,” says RTA CEO & General Manager Joe Calabrese. “Be it the financial savings or the fact that taking public transit is good for the environment, Greater Clevelanders recognize RTA as a viable means of transportation. Our pledge this year is to continue to provide as much high-quality service as our resources will allow.”

    RTA is lobbying the state to increase funding from the current $16 million (split by all of the transit agencies in the state, which ranks Ohio near the bottom of state supported transit). It is also vying for an increase in capital funds from the federal economic stimulus package. Read more.

  • In the January 2009 issue of Urban Land, several cities around the United States were highlighted for the rehabilitation of their historic warehouse districts into entertainment districts and residential hotspots. Cleveland's own Warehouse District was among those neighborhoods profiled. "Public and private investment totaling $450 million has gone into transforming the eight-block Warehouse District into a hip neighborhood; 39 of the warehouses have been restored, 28 of which are certified historic structures. This redevelopment has attracted about 3,000 new residents to the area, mainly young professionals, as well as businesses with 2,500 employees."
  • Western Reserve PBS is working on a new documentary about Cuyahoga Valley National Park. We are interested in collecting oral histories, home movies, photos and other relevant memorabilia from people who have been touched by an experience in the park.

    At all three events, a limited number of oral histories will be videotaped for potential use in the new production. These interviews are by appointment only through Western Reserve PBS.

  • Cleveland Green Building Coalition is forming Green Action Circles in 2009. The Green Action Circles are volunteer groups comprised of both members and non-members who focus on and advance specific green building topics.

    Suggested circle topics so far include: Green for Schools, Green Advocacy, Green Historic Restoration, and Green Your Facility. Initial gatherings of Green Action Circles will be held starting in February 2009. The circles will then discern their leadership, agenda and action steps.
