The world is rightly focused on climate change. But if we don't have a strategy for reducing global carbon emissions and preserving biodiversity, we could end up in a very bad place, like in a crazy rush into corn ethanol, and palm oil for biodiesel, without enough regard for their impact on the natural world.

- Northeast Ohio has a new local food blog called Bounty of the Western Reserve. Mary Holmes launched it while attending an international meeting on ‘slow’ foods in Turin, Italy last month. She was part of a delegation from Cleveland that included slow food advocate Linda Griffith and restaurateurs such as Bar Cento founder Jonathan Sawyer. Here Griffith talks about a slow food celebration in Cleveland.
- Bon Appetit is an example of a company that sees the big picture. The food service operator posts a carbon calculator for their customers to determine the ecological footprint of the food they eat (customers include Case, Oberlin and Cleveland Botanical Gardens). They have a commitment to provide at least 20 percent of its food from farms within 150 miles of their locations. Entrepreneurs for Sustainability recently named Bon Appetite's Bob Lubecky a Champion of Sustainability for personally developing local food buying with more than 35 local farms in Northeast Ohio. He also developed a biofuels program reusing fryer oil. Read the entire nomination form for Lubecky here.
- Channel 5 aired a story and is running a poll about the City of Cleveland’s proposed ordinance to legalize the tending of chickens, bees and other livestock. If you want to show your support for urban agriculture, log on and vote.
- Lora DiFranco and fellow Oberlin Environmental Studies grads mark the one year anniversary of their 'zine GreenLight. The focus of the fall 2008 issue is eating local, with articles on How to shop and eat consciously, restaurants and markets to find local food and more helpful tips. Email for more information.
