Crucial test for urban design to shape transportation

  • Euclid Corridor Beacon PlaceCleveland will have cracked the code on sustainability when it figures out how to correct the course of transportation funding, the biggest flow of dollars into the region, and use it as the engine that spurs neighborhood revitalization. A big test will be in the so-called Opportunity Corridor. The city has expressed interest in a higher design outcome and has hired former councilwoman Stephanie Howse to drive ideas for sustainable business and green infrastructure from the ReImagine a More Sustainable Cleveland study in the Opportunity Corridor. This Thursday and Friday, Cleveland Public Library, Cleveland Public Art and CSU’s Levin College of Urban Affairs will hold two public forums to drive the conversation of “how we can make the most of this moment by exploring how engineering and design can come together to shape the new American city.” Read more about Opportunities in the Opportunity Corridor.
  • The other bookend on how transportation can shape the fortunes of Cleveland comes when ODOT presents plans for the aesthetics of the Cleveland Innerbelt Bridge to The Cleveland Planning Commission next Friday morning at 9 a.m. at Cleveland City Hall. Read more about Innerbelt Bridge aesthetic considerations here. Included in the conversation is making the bridge a multi-modal source of pride for the community. Advocates have been calling for a bike and pedestrian path built on the bridge. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. The Planning Commission can accept comments from the public.
  • This week, Cleveland City Council passed a resolution opposing state Issue 2, which would establish a Livestock Care Standards Board. Led by Councilman Matt Zone, the council’s reasons for opposing Issue 2 include: “This Board would have the power to create all policies in Ohio related to animals in agriculture, affecting not just welfare concerns but also a wide variety of animal-related issues including the regulation of organic meat production, animal identification and concentrated animal feeding operations (“factory farms”); and

    WHEREAS, it is generally recognized that the Board will most likely be comprised of people with corporate agri-business and factory farming interests, at the expense of family farmers…”
