Does Cleveland have bike sharing in its DNA?

  • Denver bike sharingFirst Paris, then Washington D.C. now Denver has a bike sharing service. Here’s how it works: Reserve a bike online, swipe a card when you pick up a bike at an automated station around town, and drop it off at another station when you’re done. Denver used $230,000 from its federal Stimulus Act Energy Efficiency Block Grants (EEBG) to start up the bike share service. Similarly, Columbus is investing $400,000 in EEBGs to purchase bike racks, lockers and shelters for 300 downtown commuters. If Cleveland is to get serious about mode shift, it will need more bike parking than the planned 50 spaces at its soon-to-be-built downtown bike parking station.

    A Cleveland bike sharing service could complement Downtown Cleveland Alliance’s bike rentals from E. 4th street, and new bike parking expected from the city's soon-to-be-enacted bike parking ordinance. If Cleveland and the inner ring suburbs set as a goal even a modest 1% of the population shiftting from driving to biking, what is the right amount to invest in infrastructure (and education)?   • Speaking of bike parking…we overhead a ‘good news-bad news’ situation at a recent meeting: The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo apparently is considering a 300-rack bike parking station as part of its plans for its new, LEED-certified elephant building. A source familiar with the project says that the bike station is in danger of being scrapped…

  • What’s new with the City of Cleveland’s massive mobilization effort known as Sustainable Cleveland 2019? Last month, a session on SMART goals helped volunteers grasp goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based. In the past week or so, the groups have responded, making SMART goals their focus, and, in the process, revisited what brought them together at the 2009 summit. More details on the 2019 Blog.
