CSU’s student environmental group is looking for volunteers who are also willing to pay $10 each to install a green roof on the student recreation center from August 5-7. “We are still raising (the needed $200,000), but CSU has taken care of everything so that we can get it installed now,” says Erin Huber, the group’s president. The roof is 7,000 sq ft.–over half will be vegetated and the other portion will contain permeable pavers. Donations can be made online (100% tax deductible and 100% matched by CSU).

Rock the house
Larchmere Porchfest is a free event this Saturday in the Larchmere neighborhood of Cleveland. For one day, porches will transform into stages featuring local musicians. Based on a similar event in Ithaca, New York it highlights local talent, showcases exciting living options and creates a fun atmosphere for socializing... and dancing! 

Camping in the Valley!
For the first time the Cuyahoga Valley National Park (CVNP) is offering five primitive campsites—behind the Stanford hostel at 6093 Stanford Road in Peninsula. The "backcountry" campsites are for distance hikers and bicyclists using the nearby Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath and Buckeye trails only. The campsites are the product of an Eagle Scout project, led by candidate Ethan Scheck, 16, of Akron. In May 2009, Ethan assembled a work group comprised of 15 Boy Scouts and volunteer adults, who removed stumps and roots, assembled picnic tables, and installed non-permanent camping hooks. ZeroLandfill arts and crafts giveaway
ZeroLandfill has the opportunity to reach the 100-ton total of materials upcycled since the original program launched in late 2006. Tomorrow (6/19) is another chance to dumpster dive and take home or to your favorite school art supplies–mostly, design/architecture firm sample books. Look for the green and white-striped awning over the side entrance at 3631 Perkins Avenue in Mid-Town Cleveland.
