Stop 'death by a thousand cuts' for Ohio transit

  • 2019 work group leadersOhio’s transit service is experiencing “death by a thousand cuts” including the latest deep slash in service due to the state’s reduced support. Instead of regarding transit as welfare, All Aboard Ohio has a smart plan that boosts transit within and between cities without raising the state budget. The report looks at the millions saved by thousands of state and local government workers using the 3-C instead of government-owned cars. It tallies $80 million generated from an ‘all-Ohio transit pass’—a rail pass paid in the tuition of thousands of university students who benefit by being part of Centers of Excellence, the model of university collaboration envisioned by Gov.   • One task of the 2019 Waste to Profit group is figuring out how cities can reduce their solid waste. The group researched how Austin, Boulder, Oakland and Seattle created a Zero Waste Initiative, and considered lessons for Cleveland. The Waste to Profit group will meet on December 11 to discuss this and other goals on reducing waste. See their work here.
  • Part of any goal to reduce waste is benchmarking our performance against our peers. This report implies that Ohio is the worst among Great Lakes states in trash that ends up in the landfill. How can we do better?
  • Cleveland’s 2019 summit would be a good candidate for national support, Benjamin Erulkar, a senior adviser in corporate community investment for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center, told the Plain Dealer. Erulkar was in town meeting with Chief of Sustainability, Andrew Watterson, and attended last week’s Outcome Groups showcase.
