At this year’s IngenuityFest you’ll see plenty of artists, inventors and visionaries sharing ideas on reducing our ecological footprint. Multiple exhibits—including an entire Sustainability Room—will draw on green themes, from new inventions to reusing legacy buildings in creative ways.

The main sustainability exhibit is in Room 101 of Cleveland State University’s Monte Ahuja Hall, and is part of the TechHub exhibit space which features product innovations like Kent’s AlphaMicron’s liquid crystal eyeware and Beachwood’s EyePlusPlus, a company working on mobility for veterans.

Dr. Edward Keshock, a faculty member of CSU's Fenn College of Engineering, will showcase his Hydraulic Bicycle, which he invented in response to Parker Hannifin’s “Chainless Challenge.” He built a bike powered by a biodegradable fluid and a single human rider rather than a traditional chain and other forms of power.

Keshock’s engineering students are the drivers behind a human-powered water purification table top display inspired by Hurricane Katrina. See their portable apparatus for the purification of contaminated water via evaporative distillation.

Green Communities Design is CSU engineering students’ tabletop display of an “ideal community,” similar in size to Cleveland, with a description of how it can be planned to consider energy, water usage and the environment.

Cleveland may soon lay claim to its own wind turbine: CSU Engineering Professor Dr.Majid Rashidi’s Wind Spire, which just won $1.1 million in federal funding thanks to Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, will be on display. Learn more about how the helical wind harnessing system can generate more energy from lower wind speeds than a traditional bladed wind turbine and has more practical applications.

Also in Room 101, sustainability champion Sudhir Kade will present a video of sustainability efforts in NEO.

Local artist Michael Lehto will explore the environmental costs of consumerism in his exhibit, “Hidden Costs,” on display at the former Christian Science Reading Room (just east of the Hanna Building). His interactive video displays allow visitors to discover exactly how consumer activities result in increased greenhouse gas emissions.

"What would you do with the Breuer Tower?" an exhibit featuring more than 28 entries from local, national and even international architects explores adaptive reuse of the landmark Marcel Breuer-designed building in downtown Cleveland. The opening reception is Thursday, July 19 at 5 p.m at 1305 Euclid Avenue (corner of E. 13th St. and Euclid Ave. in the former Oberlin Gallery).

Local composer Jeff Moyer will premier his song: "Wind On The Water", which celebrates Cleveland's potential leadership role in addressing global climate change through the development of wind power at IngenuityFest on Friday, July 20. “It's a great motivator,” says Sarah Taylor, creator of the Windustrious site.
