Green Building: Retrofit Update

On July 8, the Retrofit section of the Sustainable Cleveland 2019 Green Building Working Group met for their monthly meeting.  Attached are the minutes, and what follows is a summary of the event.

At the start of the meeting, Holly Harlan from Enterpreneurs 4 Sustainability (E4S)presented the group with the opportunity to highlight our work at the next E4S 3rd Tuesday event. Harlan explained to the group how these events worked and helped brainstorm how we might make our agenda the focus of E4S’s August 17 event.  Holly ran us through several approaches that have been used in the past.  The group agreed that it would be helpful to our work to participate in this session - a small group volunteered to work with Holly on the particular structure and content.

Next, an update on the Emerald Cities coalition was given. There will be an Emerald Cities advisory group retreat on July 22 where several national Emerald Cities staff will be in attendance.   Following the Emerald Cities Update, Mark McDermott and Mandy Metcalf presented the group's Goals subommitee's findings in the form of a current goals document for discussion.  The document suggests several new approaches to our goals statement, including:

  •  Distinguishing between HWAP-income eligible programs and otherwise
  • Setting an annual goal of 5,000 units as the ultimate capacity and delivery goal
  • Reaching about 25% of all residential units by 2019
  • Having this retrofit work contribute to about a 13% in carbon emissions reduction

After good discussion, the group agreed to take back comments and do one more draft of the Goals statement for incorporation into the overall plan. Following the completion of this revised draft, a copy will be made available to those interested.

Next, Paul Ettore gave the group an update on the creation of a Greater Cleveland Energy Alliance. Ettore led this discussion and presented a PowerPoint on the need for, structure of, and roles of the proposed new Alliance.  The group has previously decided to  move forward with the planning charrette for the Alliance, and has raised $20,000 to hold it soon after the 2010 City summit, in early October.

Finally, a small group of folks volunteered to meet with McDermott and Robb Stutzman to review the status of the overall plan, what’s done and what’s not done, and structure the agenda of the August 12 meeting around the “what’s not done” category. For those with questions or comments regarding the Green Building: Retrofit Working Group, please contact Robb Stutzman at rstutzman.temp@enterprisecommunity.org.
