Plastic Debris: Lakes to Sea (CMNH Explorer Lecture)

Dr. Marcus Eriksen, environmental scientist and educator Fri, Oct 2, 2009, 7:30 pm

The Northeastern Ohio Environmental Awards Ceremony will take place prior to the lecture.Marine debris was once only logs and coconuts, now it's plastic. Hundreds of marine organisms consume it, including the ones we harvest for food. Plastic has implications for human health, from toxic plasticizers to pollutants that stick to it at sea and leach into food webs. There are solutions to this plastic plague, from new product design to eliminating throwaway plastics. Dr. Eriksen is Director of Education at the Algalita Marine Research Foundation in Long Beach, California.

Co-sponsored with Biodiversity Alliance and Dominion
