Baldwin Creek Dam Removal Public Information Session

The Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District and the City of Berea have scheduled a public information session to discuss the planned removal of three low-head dams along Baldwin Creek in Berea (see attached map). The meeting will be held from 7:00 ? 8:30 PM in the Berea Room at Berea City Hall. Cuyahoga SWCD has been awarded a $147,000 grant through the Ohio EPA Surface Water Improvement Fund for the removal of three low head dams situated along the lowermost one-half mile of Baldwin Creek in Berea. Another ~$350,000 is expected through the Ohio EPA Water Resource Restoration Sponsor Program (WRRSP). The City of Berea, Cleveland Metroparks, Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District and the Rocky River Watershed Council have partnered on the project. Deconstruction of the dams is expected to begin in late 2011. The removal of the dams will also serve to reconnect populations of the state-threatened Bigmouth Shiner (Notropis dorsalis), which are currently isolated above the dam sequence and below the dams in the East Branch of the Rocky River. For more information, call or email Rocky River Watershed Coordinator Jared Bartley at 216-524-6580 x14 or jbartley@cuyahogaswcd.org.
