Biocellar: Concept to prototype

The CUDC will present the BioCellar project, which involves partial deconstruction of a house with an added solar envelope. The repurposed basement can be put to uses like food production or community saunas. The project will also incorporate stormwater management, permaculture, etc. into the structure and its adjacent site to justify large-scale conversion of vacant housing. The team is currently working on a prototype.

Invited guests include Darrell Frey, owner of a five-acre permaculture farm in Pennsylvania. Frey will present on how a bioshelter can promote greater biodiversity and work as an energy efficient method of extending crop production through cold winter months.
