Northeast Ohio Historic Passenger Rail Conference
The Passenger Train Historical Society (PTHS) and other NEO organizations plan to host an event called the Northeast Ohio Historic Passenger Rail Conference and will be held on November 9-11, 2012 at The University of Akron Quaker Square Complex located in Akron.
The Quaker Square complex continues to be used as a lodging, retail, event and entertainment facility for The University of Akron. The facility includes three historic Pennsylvania Railroad passenger cars which are located indoors and the former Railway Express building (Depot). The facility will provide the meeting location for a majority of the conference events and the restaurants for meals. Quaker Square has a small museum with displays and includes some of Mac Lowry’s former Railways of America model trains. Owners of additional model equipment and buildings are being invited to exhibit at this event. Two have agreed to participate including the owner of the roundhouse.
On Friday morning University Students, Faculty and other authors are invited to participate in a program titled: Akron: The Canal, the Early Industries, and the Railroads.
In addition to the Static displays local model train railroad clubs will have model railroad layouts of various gauges. The layout displays will be open to the public for a small charge.
Railroad historical societies will also be participating with displays and speakers highlighting the historic operations related to passenger trains in Northeast Ohio. Dr. Craig Sanders professor of Journalism at Cleveland State University will be the featured speaker at the railroad dinning car themed dinner on Saturday evening.
Other planned events for the conference include many activities including a preconference field trip to Cleveland on Thursday, a fieldtrip to various locations in the greater Akron and Cleveland area on Friday afternoon, a passenger train slide show on Friday evening in Parma and a post conference trip to Kent and Lordstown on Sunday.
