Curriculum
- Biology 331 Course: Global Climate Change
- New environmental science major starting in the fall of 2008
Green Building
- John Carroll’s 20-year master plan calls for selecting architectural and engineering firms that emphasize and practice sustainability. In addition, local and durable recycled materials (with long life-cycles to reduce downstream waste) will be used when possible.
- Because many campus buildings have flat roofs, there is potential for green roofs or photovoltaic arrays to be installed
Purchasing
- Carpets have recycled content and long lifetimes
- 90% of paper used is recycled paper
- Green cleaning products are used across campus
Energy
- Motion sensors are scheduled to be installed in all classrooms and offices
- Energy efficient T8 fluorescent lamps have been installed in several buildings with an expected two-year payback
- 75W outdoor light fixtures are replacing 175W fixtures for energy savings and reduced light pollution
- CFLs will replace incandescent light bulbs in dorm rooms
- Low-flow showerheads, auto-flow faucets, and auto-flush toilets have been installed across campus
Food
- Local food focus
- Recycles food waste through Landmark Disposal
- Hosts “Trayless Tuesdays,” a program established in Schott Dining Hall to raise awareness about world hunger. By not taking a tray, students are encouraged to take only as much food as they will eat, reducing waste 10-15%.
- Fair trade coffee
Grounds
- Native plants
- Eco-friendly (non-salt) deicers are being used on sidewalks in the winter
- Eco-friendly fertilizers for campus landscaping
Student Group(s)
