Curriculum

Administrative Committee

Green Building

  • UAkron has worked with Habitat for Humanity to deconstruct homes in order to reuse salvageable material.
  • A recent addition to Guzzetta Hall incorporates daylighting and occupancy sensors, thereby using 40% less energy than conventional building standards

Energy

  • Energy savings from temperature setbacks through mid-January 2007 exceed 3.9 billion Btu from expected consumption.
  • Motion and heat activated lighting controls are being installed throughout campus. So far about 40% of buildings have been completed.
  • Renovation of Rob's Cafe resulted in 49% less energy for lighting and an 8% cooling load decrease

Grounds

  • Green Space throughout campus reduced heat islands
  • 2,800 new trees absorb 14 tons of CO2 per year

Transportation

  • Physical Facilities personnel use alternative vehicles similar to golf carts that have very high efficiencies
  • UAkron will soon own 12 campus shuttles to promote remote parking for commuters
  • The University of Akron is collaborating with the City of Akron to create bike paths in the city

Recycling

  • Currently recycling cans, white papers, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal, and pallets

Events

  • The Blue, Gold, and Green Committee collaborated with Environmental Akron to organize an Earth Day Celebration featuring speakers and film screenings

Student Group

  • Environmental Akron: Founded in 2007, Environmental Akron is an eco-friendly student organization focused on uniting like-minded students to promote awareness of environmental issues on and off-campus. They have organized recycling at sporting events and site cleanups near campus. Future goals include a solar stage for Earth Day 2009 and maintaining the UA cardboard recycling program.
