About half of Northeast Ohio's carbon footprint is from our consumption of electricity, which means that changing how we use and make electricity has the greatest potential to reduce the region's carbon footprint.
The cleanest, cheapest and easiest way to reduce carbon emissions associated with electricity use is to use it more efficiently. Efficiency is not necessarily about using less; it's about wasting less. In recent years new technologies have emerged that require far less energy than their older equivalents. A perfect example is the compact fluorescent lightbulb (CFL); on average CFLs use 75% less energy than a traditional incandescent lightbulb.
Decarbonizing our electricity generation through the use of renewable energy sources and cleaner fuels is another way to reduce the region's carbon footprint.
The links below provide suggestions for policies and actions to reduce electricity related greenhouse gas emissions.
This site is inspired by the memory of Richard Shatten, a former board member of EcoCity Cleveland,
who pushed Northeast Ohio to think strategically about regionalism and sustainability.
