On-road transportation accounts for about 25% of the region's carbon footprint. We are a region of sprawl, and we are extremely reliant on our automobiles to get around. Most of us don't really have a choice as there aren't really any other options. 

This is not sustainable, and it is going to get more and more costly as the price of fuel and carbon emissions rise.
