The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will hold its quarterly meeting on March 15. Commission members are expected to select the latest round of Small Grant projects. Executive Director Edwin Hammett will provide a progress report on the implementation of the commission’s Lake Erie Balanced Growth Program, as well as other lake-related programs and issues. Gary Isbell from Fish Management with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) will update commission members on aquatic nuisance species. An ODNR representative will report on the Great Lakes Charter Annex, while a representative with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) will provide on update on the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration. Other topics to be discussed include Coastweeks 2006 and the 2006 “Life on Lake Erie” photo contest.

Did you know that salamanders migrate from the forest to pools of water at the first warm rain?  Come learn about these fascinating creatures and the vernal pools in which they sometimes live. Vernal pools are not around all year long. Depending on the weather we will hike to one and see what we can find. We will create a salamander using blue clay collected from one of Holden’s vernal pools.  All participants will be added to the Salamander Hotline to be called to comeback to Holden when it is time for the salamander migration

A growing body of evidence indicates that many plants and animals, including birds, are already responding to the changes wrought by global warming.

Dr. Jeff Price, assistant professor in the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at California State University, Chico, explains what changes in bird populations have been detected and describes what could be in store, with an emphasis on the Great Lakes region, should the planet's climate continue to change.

Building Bridges Mural Program is a collaboration between St. Paul’s Community Church, Inter-Act Cleveland, West Side Ecumenical Ministries, Lutheran Metropolitan Ministries, the members of Shared Ministries and artist Katherine Chilcote.

We are working on a new community mural for the corner of West 25th and Detroit. Ms. Chilcote will auction some of her work to benefit the high school interns of Building Bridges Mural Program.
