RTA board of trustees meeting -- The Finance Committee meets at 9 a.m. to discuss a proposed across-the-board fare increase, RTA’s first in 13 years. The move is prompted by skyrocketing fuel costs that have more than tripled in recent years. If the Committee recommends the proposal to the full Board, it will be voted on at a Board meeting that immediately follows the Committee meeting. This action comes after several Board discussions at earlier meetings, and eight public hearings in late April and early May. Press release from RTA -- Frustration over skyrocketing gas prices has brought conservative Buick owners and counter-culture VW Beetle drivers together for the same cause. These and owners of all other makes and models of automobiles can take a stand against the higher prices on No Drive Day, Wednesday, May 17, by walking, running, biking or riding public transportation to work. The event, held during National Transportation Week, National Air Quality Week, and National Bike to Work Week, is being organized by the Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) and RTA as part of a local week-long celebration entitled “Healthy Air Days.” Other participants include City Year and various biking organizations throughout the region. The activity has also received support from community leaders, with Senator DeWine, Senator Voinovich, Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson, and the Cuyahoga County Commissioners all calling on area drivers to do their part by trying an alternative mode of travel on May 17. Join volunteers with the Lance Armstrong Foundation to focus attention on heath, medical research and saving lives and “Ride to Work” with the Lance Armstrong Foundation on Wednesday May 17th. You are invited to attend a presentation and discussion of important progress in the Cuyahoga Valley Initiative (CVI). It will conclude Rocky Mountain Institute's (RMI) work on CVI and describe the next steps to success as CVI begins to run on its own legs. CVI is a large-scale vision to restore the economy, river, culture, and community of the Cuyahoga Valley, especially in the area of the ship channel. In April 2004, with the guidance of local leaders, RMI developed a strategy and set of actions that would help attain this envisioned revitalization. For the past year and a half, RMI pursued the second phase of its work: implementation of some of the recommendations from Phase I. On Thursday, June 1, RMI and representatives from various agencies and organizations in the community will present their progress on various projects relating to water quality (storm water and river restoration), green industrial buildings, and economic development that turns waste into revenue. For certain projects, memoranda of understanding promising future action will be signed at this event. Wake Up! to Green Building: A Case Study of the W. 65th/EcoVillage Rapid Station Registration: The W. 65th/EcoVillage Rapid Station is the heart of the Cleveland EcoVillage. The building itseft encourages the use of alternative transportation not only because it is a rapid transit station, but also because of its accessibility to pedestrians and its available bike storage. Efficient radiant heat is used to condition the space in cool weather, while no air conditioning is used in warm weather. Rather, the structure is designed to stay cool even on the warmest days, even while the interior space is flooded with daylight. The project also made efforts to be a good community partner by providing a community garden, using a significant amount of locally produced materials, and by reducing light pollution around the building. While the West 65th Street Rapid Station did not seek LEED Certification, it's use of sustainable building design and products cleared the way for future RTA projects to be green and attempt LEED Certification. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will hold its quarterly meeting on June 7. Officials from the City of Mentor, including Mayor Ray Kirchner, City Manager John Konrad and Kurt Kraus, Director of Parks, Recreation & Public Lands, will welcome the commission and report on recent efforts to acquire the Morton Salt Property that is adjacent to Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve as parkland. Representatives of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) will present a Report On Wind Power, regarding the use of coastal wind turbines as an alternative source of electric power. Commission members are expected to approve the latest round of small grants and the Lake Erie Balanced Growth Strategy. City Fresh, a program that aims to build a just and sustainable food system in Northeast Ohio, will open two "Fresh Stops" in Cleveland on June 15. Fresh Stops are where city residents can buy market bags of produce, connecting them with farmers in the region. The locations are in the Clark-Metro neighorhood at Clark Avenue and W. 25th Street and in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood at Lorain Avenue and W.48th Street.
