The Western Reserve Land Conservancy Firelands Chapter is pleased to present a free program as part of the Huron Public Library’s Second Thursday Seminar series. Western Reserve Land Conservancy is a non-profit conservation organization that works with landowners to preserve the natural resources, productive farmland, and scenic beauty of the 14-county Western Reserve region of northeast Ohio. WRLC was formed in a January 1, 2006, merger with eight land trusts including the Firelands Land Conservancy (now the WRLC Firelands Chapter). To date, WRLC has protected almost 10,000 acres by executing conservation easements with private land owners and partnering with other agencies to acquire land. The Huron Library program will address the mission and vision of the Western Reserve Land Conservancy and our land protection strategies in the Firelands region. In addition, there will be a brief discussion about the recent legislation that Congress adopted that significantly improves the tax benefits for landowners who donate a conservation easement. For more information please call the Western Reserve Land Conservancy, Firelands Chapter at 440-774-4226, or email firelandslc@oberlin.net.

Louis Bromfield was a fascinating Ohio visionary, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, leader in early conservation efforts, and a pioneer in what is now called sustainable agriculture. Malabar Farm, Bromfield’s 1939 dream home, is designated an Ohio State Park. Learn more about Bromfield’s life and legacy, as well as his connection to Oberlin, at a free public program on Tuesday, January 23, at 7:15 p.m. in Kendal at Oberlin’s Heiser Auditorium. The program, sponsored by the Oberlin Heritage Center, will be presented by Oberlin Heritage Center member and former Pittsfield Township trustee, Ralph Hayes, who has volunteered at Malabar Farm for the past four years. Ralph Hayes formerly worked as an advertising sales representative for the Oberlin, Wellington and Amherst newspapers. He is the father of Oberlin Heritage Center trustee Bradley Hayes of Wellington. Ralph Hayes will spend time discussing Louis Bromfield’s biography, his writings, his time spent in Oberlin, and his vision and development of Malabar Farm. Louis Bromfield (1896-1956) was a native of Mansfield, Ohio. Following education at Cornell and Columbia and service in World War I, he gained acclaim as a novelist, going on to write 31 novels and non-fiction works. Bromfield’s novel Early Autumn, the story of an old, upper class New England family at the end of its influence, won the 1927 Pulitzer Prize. After spending more than a decade residing among other notable expatriate writers in France, Bromfield returned to Ohio in 1938 to buy land near his native Mansfield. He developed this site into “Malabar Farm” which became his major work during the final 18 years of his life as he gained notoriety as a conservationist and continued his writing career. He put in place the principles of grass-based, sustainable farming, and the farm was one of the first to limit the use of pesticides. Bromfield was also known for his many Hollywood friends – notably, the wedding of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall took place at Malabar Farm.

Be among the first to cycle (legally) from Downtown to the Towpath Trail without leaving the Flats! The Ohio City Bicycle Co-op's annual winter ride this year will feature a special treat: Steelyard Commons is opening this week, and with the West 3rd St. Bridge now open, we'll ride all the way to the Ohio-Erie Canal Visitor's center without climbing a single hill! Except of course for the sledding hill. We'll take a trailer to carry some sleds and skis for the three custom ski-bikes we've built, along with a heater and some cocoa and cider, to stop along the way and enjoy the seasonal weather (5" of snow predicted for tonight!). Knobby tires are necessary as the Towpath is not plowed, but if you only ride as far as the sled hill, a road bike might work. On our return to the co-op (around 4PM), enjoy renowned vegan chili, with non-vegan fixin's, and help yourself to the power washer to clean your bike. No registration fee will be charged, but donations are appreciated. For more information, call 216-830-2667.
