Mohican State Park and Hemlock Falls, Loudonville, Ohio- The Mohican Native Plant Society hosts us as we explore the park with a rich display of wildflowers including whroled pagonia. After lunch (bring your own) we'll visit Hemlock Falls, a sandstone ridge with 18 species of ferns. Directions: From Cleveland, take I-71 south, past Mansfield, to exit 165, which is SR 97, Bellville-Lexington exit. Go east (left) abd follow SR 97 through Bellville and Butler. This brings you right into Mohican St. Park, and the Memorial Shrine will be on yout right off SR 97. It takes about 1 hour from the I-71 - I-271 split (just north of Medina) to the SR 97 exit. From I-71 to Mohican Park is about 1/2 hour. Map. Bring a sack lunch, water and good shoes. We'll visit selected sites in Mohican (depending on blooms), lunch at Mohican and then go to Hemlock Falls, which will be relatively short, but a very nice area with many ferns. Degree of difficulty is about 2-3 (on a scale of 1-5). It will be mostly on trails, but there will be some inclines. On May 20, the Brookings Institution will release “Restoring Prosperity: The State Role in Revitalizing America’s Older Industrial Cities,” a comprehensive economic study of the 65 U.S. cities lagging behind their peers. The study’s leader Bruce Katz will present the findings and describe the challenges facing these communities, the unprecedented opportunity that exists to leverage their many assets, and a policy agenda to advance their renewal. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission will hold its quarterly meeting at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31, 2007. Commission members are expected to act on the latest round of small grants projects. OLEC Executive Director Edwin Hammett will also report on ongoing projects of the commission, including the Balanced Growth Program. Kyle Dreyfuss-Wells, director of the Chagrin River Watershed Partners, Inc., will present a report on Implementing Balanced Growth in the Chagrin River Watershed, which is one of the commission’s pilot projects under the Lake Erie Balanced Growth Program. A report will be given on the VHS fish virus occurring in the Great Lakes by Ray Petering from Ohio DNR’s Division of Wildlife. Advisory committee reports will be presented by Ohio Sea Grant College Program, NRCS, NOACA and TMACOG. All meetings of the Ohio Lake Erie Commission are open to the public and include a public comment period. Organizations and citizens are urged to attend this meeting and provide input on issues of concern. The Ohio Lake Erie Commission is comprised of the directors of Ohio DNR and Ohio EPA, as well as the departments of Transportation, Development, Health and Agriculture. Key Bank’s Technology and Operations campus in Brooklyn, Ohio participated in the LEED for Existing Buildings pilot program and was certified as a LEED-EB facility in April of 2005. (LEED-EB provides a recognized, performance-based benchmark for building owners and operators to measure the sustainability of their operations, improvements and maintenance on a consistent scale.) Originally constructed between 1994 and 1996, the 750,000 square foot campus includes two buildings and a parking garage, and accommodates 2,000 employees. Sustainable features of this LEED-EB pilot project include: reuse of a Brownfield site; alternative transportation with a bus stop on the campus and RTA lines nearby; energy efficient mechanical and lighting systems; a comprehensive recycling program; and green housekeeping. more information. New York-based architects from Davis Brody Bond, the only firm that proposed an adaptive reuse of the Breuer tower, will travel to Cleveland to present their analysis to the Cleveland City Planning Commission. To demolish the tower, the county needs a permit from the Planning Commission. The commission voted in March to consider the demolition request if the county met six conditions, including completion of a master plan for the proposed new administrative center and a presentation on plans to save the tower. Cleveland, OH – On June 2, 2007, the Rocky River Watershed Council, Cleveland Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District will be hosting a stream clean up of the Rocky River from 9:00am–Noon. Volunteers are needed to help pick up stream side trash and should meet at the Emerald Necklace Marina/Scenic Park Picnic Shelter at the north end of the Rocky River reservation by 8:45am.

As cities and suburbs replaced forests and agricultural land, increased storm water runoff from impervious surfaces led to aquatic pollution and increased flooding in our communities, and displaced habitat for birds and butterflies. By reducing storm water runoff by as much as 30%, rain gardens can be a valuable part of changing these trends. Meiring Borcherds, of the Chagrin River Watershed Partners, will share why rain gardens are so important. While an individual rain garden may seem like a small thing, collectively they produce substantial community and wildlife benefits. And what’s the best part? They’re beautiful! Cuyahoga Valley National Park seeks public input regarding its preparation of an environmental assessment for the modification of Virginia Kendall Dam. The National Park Service, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, is in the process of preparing the environmental assessment for the dam to correct hydrologic deficiencies. The assessment will include discussion of the project's potential environmental and recreational impacts. The assessment will compare the no-action alternative to a proposed action alternative that includes excavation and construction of a new rip-rapped emergency spillway, excavating the existing dam crest and replacing it with new fill to raise it 2 feet, reconstructing the trail on the dam crest, removing accumulated sediments from the reservoir, cleaning out an existing storm sewer, and installing a new guardrail fence at the spillway outlet.
