The annual Waterloo Arts Festival is a vibrant and lively day of music, art and demonstrations that grows bigger and more exciting each year. With 2,000 visitors expected to wander through downtown Waterloo, there will be something to catch every eye, from innovative storefront exhibits to dazzling street performers. With some of the city’s best music close at hand, and great food to sample from local restaurants, the event caters to diverse tastes, and lets residents and visitors explore an eclectic array of buyable and unusual art.

Some of the popular features of last year are returning, including public art installations and exhibits that will run through the month of August; children’s activities with custom installations; live music presented by MUSIC SAVES and the Beachland Ballroom; performance art, poetry and dance as well as merchant booths.

But in the spirit of growth, new and creative features are offered each year. Some new twists this year include festival power provided by New America Energy, a bio-fuels enterprise that will help take the festival “green”, with all bio-diesel generators and demonstrations of alternative fuel sources, along with organic foods and goods from local providers.

Look for surprise visits of popular highlights from regional events such as Parade the Circle, the Cardboard Festival, and Ingenuity. Other creative collaborations with Cleveland Rides, Ohio City Bike CoOp and Clevelanders in Motion will ensure lots of great activities for children and families, as well as unique opportunities to tour this emerging arts district on foot or via pedal power.

The Atlas is a 5-year project to document the breeding birds of Ohio and to see how the bird populations have fluxuated since the survey was done 20 years ago. Dick and Jean participated in both the 1982-1987 atlas when they found 60 species of birds. They are currently working on the 2006-2010 atlas. Their bird watching is focused on Lake View Cemetery and they have written a booklet about The Breeding Birds of Lake View Cemetery.

You don't have to be a professional birder to participate in the Atlas. If you see a Robin carrying food in your front yard you can enter it into the atlas website if you have field notes of when and where. Bring your data and we can enter it for you.

Senator Sherrod Brown will be at the Cleveland Foodbank to participate in a forum about hunger and the Farm Bill.

Senator Brown, a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, will have a key role in crafting the Senate’s version of the Farm Bill, which funds critical anti-hunger programs including The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), which provides 30% of the food distributed by food banks nationally, and Food Stamps (used by approximately 177,000 Cuyahoga County residents to help them stretch their food dollars). The Farm Bill is only reauthorized every five years so now is the time to push for improvements to these programs moving forward.

Local food activists encourage people to attend the forum to help show Senator Brown that these programs are important to Northeast Ohioans and low income families in the region.

RSVP to Holli at 216-738-2265 x2119 or hsachs@clevelandfoodbank.org.

What does creativity have to do with business success, healthy relationships, eating disorders and personal growth?  People from all over the world will ponder that question at the International Creativity Conference, hosted by The Gestalt Institute of Cleveland and Cleveland State University.

Creativity, traditionally seen as a special gift of remarkable and exceptional personalities, is considered in Gestalt theory to be essential for adapting to life experiences and an important ingredient in healthy relationships.

Margherita Spagnuolo-Lobb, internationally renowned Gestalt theorist, practitioner, and co-editor of Creative License, will present this revolutionary concept of creativity in her keynote address.  Other noted experts will discuss cutting-edge thinking in Gestalt theory and present creative approaches to organizational development, consulting, teaching, interpersonal relationships, eating disorders, personal growth and – yes, the one we’re most familiar with – art and culture.

SOUTH EUCLID -- The Third Annual South Euclid Recycling Committee "Freecycle"
The Freecycle allows residents to get rid of items they no longer want and, at the same time, pick up items they may want. There is no charge for items one takes from the event.

"It's a way to reduce solid waste by sharing, or recycling stuff," said Ward 4 Councilwoman Jane Goodman, a member of the city's recycling committee. "Everybody has too much stuff, and this is a good way to get rid of that stuff."

"We had some good things last year," said SERC co-chairwoman Jean Nadeau. "We had a mounted swordfish, and things like computers, bikes, used exercise equipment and, of course, clothes and books."

Nadeau said fellow co-chairwoman Madeline Pollack came up with the idea for the Freecycle, which is not known to take place in any other area community.

During the week of August 20 – 24, 2007, how many days can you avoid driving alone?

How to Participate:

Step 1- Choose an Alternative to Driving Alone. See the list of options below.

Step 2- Challenge Yourself or Others in an Informal Competition.

Step 3- Tell Us Your Results. During the week, e-mail us the number of people and days you are participating. Any stories are welcomed.

Step 4- Collect Your Bragging Rights for Saving the Planet! See what you will save below.

More info and a flyer for your workplace @ http://www.noaca.org/commutechall.html

What will you save in terms of air pollution and money?

For every 20-mile round-trip that you eliminate, you'll save a gallon of gas, wear-and-tear on your vehicle, the frustration of dealing with traffic, plus (if every person in Northeast Ohio can save a trip just ONE day during the Commuter Challenge):

2.12 tons Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) eliminated!
4.63 tons Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) eliminated!
0.77 tons Particulate Matter (PM) eliminated!

VOCs and NOx contribute to Northeast Ohio's ozone problem. Learn more by visiting the Ozone Action Day page.

NOx and PM contribute to Northeast Ohio's fine particle problem. Visit the Fine Particle Pollution Program page for more info.

(In addition, for those concerned about greenhouse gases, every gallon of gas not burned saves 21 lbs. of Carbon Dioxide (CO2). CO2 weighs about 3 times as much as the gallon of gasoline that it originated from. For our entire region, saving that gallon of gas for one day would eliminate 10,150 tons of CO2. Wow!)

Wow!)

Help the Nature Center design its Stewardship Volunteer Center. The stewardship center will be a community design and barn-raising event with opportunities to use brain and brawn to create a wonderful gathering place for volunteers.

First up, an environmental mural brainstorming session, with local muralist Katherine Chilcote. With cob and straw-bale, we will be able to sculpt plaster, paint with natural pigments, and create mosaics or murals to ensure that this green building embodies one of the key tenets of sustainable design: enduring aesthetics that create a sense of place.

Please join us and lend your ideas to this public art project that will become a part of our community’s culture. RSVP to Jan Zorman, by August 27th, at 216-321-5935, x229.
