Explorer Lecture Series with Harriet Washington:  The history of medical research with African Americans remained largely unexplored until journalist Harriet Washington published the book Medical Apartheid, the product of years of research into long-undisturbed medical journals and experimental reports. Using this work and many arresting, rarely seen images, she discusses the science and ethics behind this long-neglected chapter in the history of medicine, which paralleled American culture at large. She also demonstrates how for centuries, racist mythology, economics and politics trumped scientific and medical discipline – and how this history can serve as a cautionary tale.

The film relates the struggle over control of the world’s water, and how concerned citizens are taking it back from corporations. Over the millennia, water has been considered not property but a birthright, a resource vital to life. Recently, of course, multinational corporations have been drilling and bottling it for profit. And, in many places, management of the water supply has been turned over by local governments to foreign corporations who charge the local population.

The demand for organic food keeps growing, and an upcoming workshop will share with Ohio farmers how they can start to profit from it.

“Organics 101: An Introduction to Organic Crop Production,” sponsored by the Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association (OEFFA) and by Ohio State University’s Organic Food and Farming Education and Research (OFFER) Program, runs from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, March 20, at the university’s Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center (OARDC), 1680 Madison Ave.

Featured will be organic farmers and OFFER researchers together presenting the latest and best recommendations on transitioning to organic production.

Marketing organic crops, the economics of organic production, the organic certification process, organic certification standards and finding approved production inputs will be among the topics. So will crop rotations, pest management and soil biology.

The growing demand for organic food presents a great opportunity for Ohio farmers, workshop organizers say.

Any Ohio farmer who is looking for information on organic crop production is encouraged to attend, they add.

Registration costs $25 per person if received by March 10 and $30 per person after March 10. Lunch is included.

To register, send your name, address, telephone number (optional), e-mail address (optional) and payment to Kathy Bielek, 201 Thorne Hall, OFFER, OARDC, 1680 Madison Ave., Wooster, OH 44691. Make checks payable to OSU/OFFER.

"MIGHTY BLUE: The Great Lakes Basin Water Compact" with Marnie Urso, Great Lakes Restoration & Policy, Grassroots Coordinator, Audubon Ohio...

View the movie, "MIGHTY BLUE" with Marnie and Illustrator, Ralph Solonitz, who makes the preservation case from a different perspective...

What is the role of the Great Lakes in the 21st Century? Should the Great Lakes be diverted to arid areas of the southwest U.S. or restored? Learn about efforts to restore and protect the world's largest body of fresh water for future generations...

"Led by Rep. Matthew Dolan, last week the Ohio House of Representatives voted 88-3 in favor of responsible and balanced water protection by approving House Bill 416, legislation to ratify the Great Lakes Basin Water Resources Compact without amendment...

Now the bad news. In the Ohio Senate, a bare majority of 17 Senators has co-sponsored Senate Bill 291, legislation to ratify a version of the Compact containing amendments that they have drafted and that have not been reviewed or approved in any other state. Audubon Ohio has dubbed the Senate Bill the "Great Lakes NONpact" because it represents a blatant attempt, under the guise of supposedly non-controversial amendments, to unwind the careful eight-state negotiations that lead to the final draft of the Compact and to torpedo the entire Compact process"...more at http://oh.audubon.org.
