Come see what could be the greenhouse of the future as the Cleveland Botanical Garden and Kent State University embark on a collaborative partnership exploring the potential of liquid crystal technology for creating more sustainable, energy-efficient greenhouses. The College of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University has been a long time advocate of sustainable design education, research, and practice and, for the last two years, an adopter of Edward Mazria’s 2030 architectural challenge to design buildings that approach carbon neutrality. In response to the challenge this event will take place to celebrate the fourth year comprehensive design studio by exhibiting the students work. The projects presented will demonstrate the use of passive and active climate responsive design principles to create a highly efficient facility while trying to achieve a livable, comfortable and healthy environment in harmony with the place in which the project is perceived. This project explores the use of different simulation software and design tools and methods to achieve and evaluate climate-based strategies. Students explored the use of innovative materials, lighting, HVAC, water conservation, and structural systems to achieve these goals. | ||

As numerous species of birds return to the area, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo will celebrate their arrival with International Migratory Bird Day. Northern Ohio’s bicycle groups are coming together to produce the first ever Cleveland Bicycle Week, May 12 – 16, 2008. The idea is to promote cycling during National Bike Month by hosting fun and educational activities. Thursday May 15th attend a one-day conference for government officials, health and wellness agencies, the media and other interested parties. On Friday, Andy Clark of the League of American Bicyclists will present Cleveland with a Bicycle Friendly Community designation (at the Cleveland Planning Commission meeting, 9 am at Cleveland City Hall). Movie night of Cleveland Bike Week -- See films about bikes, made by cyclists and/or that celebrate the wonder and the joy of bicycles! We are putting together an entertaining evening of film shorts that you probably haven’t seen before. Tall bikes, small bikes, rowing bikes and garden bikes. Rollerblades, rollerskates, wheelies and scooters. If you arrive via a human-powered vehicle you will receive extra raffle tickets for the prize drawings. Summer Farm & Science School at Crown Point Farm and Education Center, 3220 Ira Road in Bath, Township. Offers children 6-8 and 9-11 the opportunity to investigate the interactions of people, plants and animals in the farm community. Children will become members of Crown Point's diverse community engaging in science, art, math, music, language arts and games to develop critical thinking and team-building skills. Six one-week day sessions: June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25 and July 28-August 1. Fee is $175 per week.
