Transportation systems represent a significant share of our region’s carbon footprint and require significant investments to build and maintain. We will be holding 2 or 3 meetings in the coming months, with smaller work groups in between the large meetings. We have invited a diverse group of representatives including county engineers, county planners, port authorities, transit agencies, MPOs, ODOT, and other public and private sector representatives. By participating in the work groups, you will have the opportunity to shape the discussion on greenhouse gas challenges for Northeast Ohio and respond to proposed solutions. The National Wildlife Federation, with support of the Cuyahoga Soil and Water Conservation District and local natural resource professionals will be hosting Backyard Habitat Stewards Workshops this fall. Adult volunteers will be trained and certified as Backyard Habitat Stewards and will be equipped with the knowledge to assist community residents in transforming their local schools, worksites, and backyards into wildlife habitats. Each year, our agency strives to share our expertise through a variety of programs, events, and site visits. On September 13th, 2008, Cuyahoga SWCD will hold its Annual Meeting and Conservation Day at the Cleveland Metroparks Euclid Creek Reservation. POLAR-PALOOZA: A Celebration of Polar Research Join guest scientists and Natural History Museum staff for a day of exciting hands-on activities stationed throughout the Museum, sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation and NASA. Meet researchers who live and work in some of the most extreme conditions on the planet. See a 3,000-year-old ice core, touch 230 million year old fossilized wood from Antarctica, and try on some of the cold-weather gear used in the U.S. Antarctic Program. The goal of the Grey to Green festival is to increase awareness of environmental issues in general, the grey to green concept in the Youngstown 2010 Plan, and the Wick Park Revitalization effort that is currently underway. Wick Park will be transformed into a “green world” that will include environmentally oriented businesses, community organizations, and local and regional agencies. Throughout the park, there will be workshops, displays, demonstrations, entertainment, food, and “green” merchandise vendors. The Festival itself will be put together with an emphasis on sustainable practices—minimal energy and resource consumption, maximum recycling and waste reduction. Phil Donahue will return to his home town of Cleveland on Sunday, September 14th, to receive Ohio Citizen Action's 2008 Howard M. Metzenbaum award. The event, which will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Cleveland Institute of Art's Cinematheque theater, will include a viewing of Donahue's stirring documentary Body of War (87 minutes), question and answer session with Donahue and a coffee and dessert reception to follow.
Phil Donahue began his broadcast career at Cleveland's NBC affiliate and launched his audience participation television talk show in Dayton in 1967. The show, which was honored with 20 daytime EMMY awards, ran for 29 years and changed the face of daytime television. He is currently touring the nation as co-producer/director of the documentary Body of War. This film follows the story of Tomas Young, a 25 year-old paralyzed U.S. soldier, who was wounded after serving for less than a week in Iraq.
