•Landmark zoning/land use court decisions and how they influence planners and public officials in making more rational and legal land use and zoning choices. Since 1980, aquaculture industries have expanded rapidly in Latin America from Mexican mangroves to the fjords of Patagonia. What this potential revolution in food production means for Latin America's economies and ecosystems is the subject of a fierce debate that revolves around the idea of sustainability: advocates see aquaculture as an industry that reduces pressures on ocean fisheries while creating food, livelihoods, and export revenues. Critics cite marine pollution, the introduction of exotic species, and the creation of hazardous work conditions as major problems. This talk will demonstrate how the interdisciplinary perspectives of environmental history can help us evaluate the promise and peril of aquaculture in Latin America.

Lecture presented by John Soluri, Associate Professor of History at Carnegie Mellon University.

Location: Cleveland, Ohio at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes

Dates: Feb. 6-7, Feb. 20-21, March 6-7,
March 13-14, March 27-28, and April 10-11

Over six weekends, Saturday morning through Sunday afternoon, we will present the internationally recognized curriculum in permaculture design. Permaculture has the potential to have a huge impact in the formerly industrial cities of the Midwest, where shrinking populations and abundant urban land are leading the development of regenerative urban food systems. This course will place a focus on exploring options for developing healthy local food systems, community resilience, and local networks of support. Participants will gain experience with permaculture by developing designs for emerging urban garden projects, installing a demonstration garden and visiting established systems. This course will also include a weekend trip to explore the renowned local food system of Athens county, Ohio.

This course is sponsored by: the Green Triangle Project, Grow Youngstown, Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association, and Habitats Ecological Design.

Environmental Lobby Day at the Ohio Statehouse, sponsored by the Ohio Environmental Council.

This year’s theme is "Your State, Your Voice," and will focus on three main topics:

Natural resource funding for state natural areas and state nature preserve
Transportation funding for public transit and 3C passenger rail
Your own/local environmental-conservation issue(s).

The OEC will arrange appointments for you with lawmakers as well as give you tips and information to make your meetings as productive as possible. The day includes training in the morning at the Columbus YWCA, lunch at the Statehouse Atrium with lawmakers and staff, lobby visits and tours at the Statehouse, and an after-hours "Cocktails & Conversation" reception to network and share the day’s experiences at the Hyatt on Capitol Square.

We'll clear trash from the stream corridor from the brook's mouth at Lake Erie to the headwaters in the Heights on two consecutive Saturdays, April 17th at Rockefeller Park Lagoon Gazebo at 1pm at the corner of East 105th and MLK Boulevard and April 24th, at the Nature Center's pavilion at 9am. Hosted by the Doan Brook Watershed Partnership, Case Western Reserve University, and the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes; all ages are welcome to our community clean ups.
