2010 Conservation Symposium - Urban Ecology: Nature in the City

Date/Time:
September 10, 2010 - 9:00am

Urban Ecology: Nature in the City
The Seventh-Annual Conservation Symposium at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History

Keynote Addresses

Dr. Rhiannon Crain is the Project Leader for the YardMap Network at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The YardMap Network is a new kind of citizen science project that blurs the line between virtual and reality by letting users map their yards, parks, schools, and other green-spaces. YardMap connects users to their land and scientists to a wealth of landscape data to aid in national conservation efforts through research and education.

Dr. Stan Gehrt is associate professor at The Ohio State University. Dr. Gehrt will discuss his decade-long coyote research project—the largest urban study of these animals in the nation. Since its inception, more than 400 coyotes have been captured and tracked. Recently, their research has focused on the relationships between coyotes and other species, including geese, foxes and cats.

Field Trips & Workshops

Join us on Thursday afternoon, September 9, and Saturday morning, September 11, for field trips to various urban natural areas. Several workshops will also be offered on September 9. Topics include rain barrel construction, composting and landscaping with native plants.

On September 11, join us at the Lower Edgewater State Park Beach at 9 am for the Second Annual Great Lake Erie Boat Float. Watch boats made out of post-consumer recyclable materials race in the Lake. Watch for news about a guest celebrity appearance!
