(Near Playhouse Sq. Behind Wyndham Hotel)

The Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement is a critical foundation of U.S. and Canadian federal efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes. Signed in 1972, the agreement is now undergoing review and may be revised. Here’s an opportunity for you to shape the voice of the environmental community on this key issue.
You’ll get a free box lunch, and have the chance to participate in this six-hour video conference organized by Great Lakes United. Here’s your chance to:
*Be quickly briefed on the importance of the agreement and the current official review process,
*Extensively explore options available under the review,
*Make recommendations on positions taken by environmentalists taking part in the review.
It’s important! In thirty-five years the agreement has had a major impact on Great Lakes environmental protection:
*In its original form, signed 1972, the agreement was responsible for saving Lake Erie from biological death caused by untreated sewage discharges.
*After being revised in 1978, the agreement was responsible for generating a scientific research effort on the effects of toxic substances on wildlife and humans so extensive that it was arguably the prime basis for the world wide convention on persistent organic pollutants signed in 2000.
*After being revised for the last time in 1987, the agreement was responsible for the creation of plans for the cleanup of 43 toxic hotspots around the basin, with two so far officially cleaned up and two more at hand.
Please join us! Whether you’re an expert or only know you love Lake Erie! To RSVP and for more information, contact Keith Dimoff (keith@theoec.org) or Kristy Meyer (kristy@theoec.org) at the Ohio Environmental Council, or call them at 614-487-7506.
