Volunteers Needed for Rocky River Stream Clean-Up
Cleveland, OH – On June 2, 2007, the Rocky River Watershed Council, Cleveland Metroparks and the Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District will be hosting a stream clean up of the Rocky River from 9:00am–Noon. Volunteers are needed to help pick up stream side trash and should meet at the Emerald Necklace Marina/Scenic Park Picnic Shelter at the north end of the Rocky River reservation by 8:45am.
This is a great opportunity to get involved in the preservation of the Rocky River Watershed. While water quality is improving in our streams, problems still exist as a result of non-point source pollution. Non-point source pollution comes from sources that are hard to pin-point such as debris that is washed into the stream from storm water. This pollution eventually makes it way into Lake Erie – the source of our drinking water. Volunteers will gain an understanding of how streams work and evolve, potential threats that can affect the health of a stream, and what they can do to reduce or eliminate those threats.
Bags and work gloves will be provided. Dress for the weather and wear work boots or work shoes. Long sleeves and slacks are recommended. Children under 18 must have adult supervision. Refreshments will be provided for volunteers.
