Buckeye Learning Farm (Cleveland Botanical Garden site on Woodland Ave.)
● Kelly Barrett of the Cleveland Botanical Garden Green Corps program circulated a
diagram showing possible additions to the farm, including a fruit orchard, a sitting area,
and community plots. (An application process for the community plots is not yet in
place.)
● Lisa Davis of the Network for Neighborhood Success said that students in her program
are doing a project called “Expression of Love through Art.” She would like to explore
the possibility of having them do their project presentations at the Buckeye Learning
Farm.
● Comments, questions, and suggestions from residents:
○ Positive activity at the farm helps to push crime away from the neighborhood.
○ What guidelines/restrictions will be placed on residents who have community
plots? How much freedom will they have to choose what they grow?
○ Will residents who have community plots be allowed to offer their produce for
sale?
○ Could a homeless person be given residence in a vacant home in the
neighborhood in return for keeping watch over the garden?
 Tereena Marks mentioned that Ward 5 Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland
is exploring the concept of “squatting contracts.” Tereena said that she
would follow up to get more information. Marvetta Rutherford said that
she would be interested in exploring the concept, too.
Energy Efficiency
● Lee Fields of the Cleveland Housing Network presented information about the Cleveland
Energy Saver program. The program is for Dominion customers who are not eligible for
PIP or HEAP.
● Meeting participants expressed an interest in hearing about the Cleveland Housing
Network’s Home Weatherization Assistance Program and Housewarming Program
(which serve residents who are eligible for PIP or HEAP) at the next Green Dots
meeting.
● There was a brief discussion about the controversy over the City of Cleveland's plan to
create a waste-to-energy/gasification facililty on Cleveland's West Side. Meeting
participants shared information about upcoming public hearings on the issue.
New Community Center
Jacqueline Mills, manager of the new Woodhill Homes Community Center, shared the following
information:
● Residents of Woodhill Homes will be participating in the Garden Soxx program this
spring.
● Ms. Mills will also invite interested residents to attend the next Green Dots meeting.
● The Community Center will host a “Demo Day” on January 20 to familiarize community
members with some of the services that will be offered at the Community Center.
● The Community Center will host Family Fun Days on the third Saturday of each month,
with the first one scheduled for January 21.
● Ms. Mills emphasized that the Community Center is open to the entire community, not
just to residents of Woodhill Homes.
Next Meeting
● Participants agreed to accept the invitation of the teens in the Neighborhood Leadership
Youth Program of the Network for Neighborhood Success. They will co-host a special
Green Dots meeting on February 4, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Rice Branch L
