Kentucky Garden in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhoodAn important part of a sustainable food system is the food people grow themselves. This section will cover urban gardens in Northeast Ohio, as well as organic techniques to make your garden as green and healthy as possible. (Note that landscaping issues, such as lawn care and backyard habitats, are in the Land section of the site.)

Grow your own!

I have written a short and easy guide to preparing your garden for growing vegetables. Hopefully this will help people make the choice to starting growing themselves!

  • Gardens can be big or small, it makes no difference to the crops. 50 square feet is ample!
  • You need to find a spot that has
sun all year in your garden.
  • Clear the garden of all rocks and weeds.
  • Ideally you need to prepare the gardening space and soil. Use compost to mix into the soil and cover your garden with leaf matter to create some nutrients. Once composted the worms will do all of the hard work for you!
  • Use
a pick or shovel to mix through the top 3 inches of soil.
  • Remember to keep the soil damp.
  • Try your best not to walk on the soil once you have mixed it through. This will prevent it from compacting down.

Now you are ready to start planting your fruit and vegetables! Remember to plant them in rows to give yourself space to move in between.

More info on preparing your garden for growing vegetables.

Hope you find this useful guys!
