How can the most urbanized county in Ohio develop a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable food system? That's the issue for the newly formed Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Food Policy Coalition.

The coalition is developing working groups on Community Food Assessment, School Nutrition, Land Use and Planning, Institutional Purchasing, Food Waste Recovery, and Rural/Urban Interface.

See the group's website here.

Help build a regional agenda for growing and eating more locally produced food here.

Key organizers of the group include:

Morgan Taggart
Program Assistant, Steps to a Healthier Cleveland/City Fresh Community Gardening Program
OSU Extension, Cuyahoga County

David Pearl
Communication and dissemination coordinator, Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods at Case

Brad Masi
Executive Director, New Agrarian Center

Pollan writes to president elect

Susan Miller Says:

This is a must read letter to the next "Farmer in Chief".

With acres of vacant land in Cuyahoga County and the city of Cleveland, how can we lead this effort/initiative here?

Shall we begin to demand that children receive locally grown food in their school lunchrooms?

Can we provide tax incentives for urban farmers? Can Land Bank land be provided for urban agriculture? Can restaurants and grocers receive tax incentives for taking their food waste to local compost sites? Could we launch a pick up of food waste as we have vehicles who collect yard waste?

Please add your suggestions for our law and policy makers below.  Can't wait to see what brilliant ideas come out of this one!
