caps to plastic water bottle

Ken_Brickman Says:

The plastic caps to water bottles and most recyclable plastic bottles i.e. soda, milk, motor oil, are not recycyleable. The plastic used for the caps is made of PVC which is highly detrimental to the recycling process. If a small amount of PVC is mixed in with a large amount of recyclable material it may ruin the entire batch. Even though the cap may have a 5 in the recyclable symbol sign, it is not a good idea to throw the cap in with your recyclables.

They can be recycled, but it depends on local recycling facility

Brad Chase Says:

During a tour of Waste Management's Cleveland Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in November 2008 (see photos, blog post), we learned that in the Cleveland area, Waste Management is able to effectively sort out the plastic bottle caps (usually #5) from the bottles (#1).  Basically, the plastic caps are sorted by shaking the recycling line.  If the caps are still on the bottles, when the plastic bottle is compacted, the plastic lids pop off.

For an audio explanation of the different melting points of plastics, and why some communities don't recycle the plastic caps, there is an informative piece from July 14, 2008 on NPR here:  Why can't you recycle plastic bottle caps?
