Beyond Pesticides Ohio

Beyond Pesticides Ohio seeks to protect the public, in particular the most vulnerable (children and the chemically sensitive), by promoting safe and effective alternatives to the use of toxic chemicals. A special focus is the promotion of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods in schools.

The group won a significant victory recently by convincing the State of Ohio to legislate that all Ohio schools, public and private, be required to adopt safer IPM pest control policies as part of amendments to Jarod's Law. According to BPO executive director Barry Zucker, "Our Pesticide Alternatives for Safer Schools project (PASS) played the lead role in assuring that a strong, clear definition of IPM was adopted. Despite heavy lobbying from a powerful segment of the pesticide industry to resend the IPM requirement, we were able to push back and preserve this school IPM mandate."

Beyond Pesticides Ohio Offering Presentations for Your Group

Barry Zucker Says:

Beyond Pesticides Ohio can show their "Fabulous Lawn Care Without Chemicals"  PowerPoint presentation to your group as part of our Safe Lawn, Landscapes and Public Spaces Project. Contact us to schedule a presentation which includes a short talk, PowerPoint and Q&A on the importance of transitioning to natural turf care.

This program includes a discussion of lawn chemicals' health effects on people (especially children), pets and the environment, the growing local and national movement towards eliminating toxic lawn chemicals and affordable solutions for transitioning to natural turf care.

Please note, that for the sake of childrens' health, a number of greater Cleveland schools and cities have stopped using lawn chemicals on their school grounds, playing fields and public spaces because these toxins have been associated with asthma, childhood leukemia, learning disabilities, ADHD and other health problems. This includes Cleveland Heights, Middleburg Heights, Lakewood, and all six acres of Wade Oval at University Circle. They have all eliminated lawn chemicals and have transitioned to more natural turf care practices.
Nationally, last year New York state and Connecticut banned lawn chemicals on all school grounds and playing fields.
