Abbey Avenue bridge, proposed ODOT bike accomodation

Abbey Avenue bridge, proposed ODOT bike accomodation

Instead of including bike and pedestrian accomodations on the rebuilt innerbelt bridge, at the November 6, 2009 Cleveland Planning Commission meeting, ODOT representatives presented a plan to accomodate bike traffic on Abbey Avenue and West 20th street, connecting to existing bike lanes on the Lorain-Carnegie bridge.

The existing Abbey Avenue bridge, completed in 1991, is currently 27 feet curb to curb, with roughly 4 foot sidewalks on either side.  ODOT proposes reducing the vehicle travel lanes to 11 feet in each direction, removing the existing cement barrier between the sidewalk and roadway, striping 5 foot bike lanes on either side, and adding a 4 foot sidewalk on either side.  The existing deck could handle the vehicle and bike lanes, but the sidewalks would have to be added over the sides.  ODOT estimated that this section would cost roughly $800,000 to accomodate bikes.
