Suburb Guy wants to figure out sustainability

No major introductions, but I confess that I do not live a sustainable life.

I guess I leave a large carbon footprint. I work for a large, global company. I don’t compost. I don’t drive a hybrid car or regularly take public transportation. I am sure there are many other non-green things I do, but I really do want to be better. I care about my future and that of my children and their children. I am trying to learn, and thinking about changing my ways. I welcome guidance from all and expect criticism more than praise along the way.

a few suggestions for suburban guy

Susan Miller Says:

for the guy who lives in some deer's backyard. Since you have chosen to live out there in what I call "more land" (that is more land that many of us have), you can easily consider a few easy options. Feed the wildlife by opting for natives rather than planting anew in nature -- you already selected a beautiful place. This fall when the leaves fall on your property, don't let anyone take those leaves away -- your property can use the carbon. Make a place for the leaves to cycle back to the soil and use them to blanket the garden beds, etc. If you have one of those lawns that looks like it surrounds a baronial manse, just avoid the herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers. The Chagrin River will thank you for it. Now composting is as easy as one two three. Buy a composter (they are tidier than what you might build and keep the wildlife from having a party in your yard) and put all the kitchen waste (not meat or cheese) in it for a year. You'll be amazed at what it will produce for your garden beds a year from now. Check into the recycling available via Orange Village civic programs. Here in the Heights its curbside all the recyclable in one bag weekly.
Global is not bad as concerns the corporation, we're headed for a flatter world in general. If you work downtown consider park and ride. If not, hey, park and ride to the airport. It's cheaper than parking at the airport anyway.
If these suggestions are way off base or don't fit your life, you'll let me know. The way to lead a more sustainable life is along a path of education. You're on your way. Your grandchildren thank you!
