The following is a condensed timeline of Whiskey Island's history (provided by advocacy group Friends of Whiskey Island):

  • 1796- When Moses Cleaveland founded Cleveland, Whiskey Island was east of the river.
  • 1825- Mouth of the river relocated, transforming Whiskey Island into a peninsula west of the river.
  • 1830- Lorenzo Carter, first settler, builds a whiskey distillery- thus the name Whiskey Island.
  • 1910- Whiskey Island is filled north of the railroad tracks creating a new land mass- now a park.
  • 1993- Whiskey Island Partners build a new public access marina and parkland area.
  • 2004- Board of Cuyahoga County Commissioners acquires the parkland and marina for the public.
