Promote Equitable, Affordable Housing

The Application Consortium adopted the following priorities that align to the following Sustainable Communities' Livability Principle:

Promote Equitable, Affordable Housing
Improve economic competitiveness through reliable and timely acess to employment centers, education opportunities, services, and other basic needs by workers, as well as expanded business acess to markets.

---------------------------

  • Adopt a “fix-it first” strategy for housing by transforming the existing housing stock to become affordable to all income brackets where total cost of ownership includes purchase prices, general maintenance, energy consumption, and transportation costs
  • Create incentives and support housing strategies that create meaningful access to jobs, health and social services, and amenities through the proximity of mixed use development and multi-modal transportation centers
    • Provide resources and use mobility counseling to help low-income residents identify housing and transportation opportunities in higher opportunity communities and promote zip codes of opportunity
    • Incorporate senior housing alternatives to nurture seniors’ ability to “age in place” by improving individuals’ quality of life and reducing the need to relocate in order to remain independent
  • Affirmatively further fair housing practices and support the development of housing near job opportunities especially for low-income brackets
  • Create a comprehensive Housing Information System to increase the transparency of affordable housing and home maintenance alternatives across the region
    • Create a forum for independent housing authorities to align policies and meet the needs of the full region collectively
    • Develop a communication and information mechanism to enhance usability and experience for residents
