Plan for MLK Jr. Drive from UDAFrom University Circle Inc. (UCI) spring '06 newsletter:

Shaping the Future of University Circle, the strategic plan for the Circle, identified the need to make University Circle more accessible and easier to navigate. In response, UCI launched a study focusing on MLK Jr. Drive and its intersections throughout the Circle — arguably the most difficult traffic network.

In October 2005, Urban Design Associates (UDA) — a nationally recognized Pittsburgh-based consulting firm — led a $228,000 study collecting land-use, traffic, transit and historic data on the MLK corridor.

In December, UDA returned to share and test some ideas. Suggestions include elements of landscape architecture, traffic changes (such as eliminating the dreaded traffic rotary at E. 105th Street and MLK Drive), and new housing. Additional work session, design charettes and public meetings were held in December.

Now in the third and final phase of the study, UDA is evaluating feedback and refining the proposal. UDA's traffic consultants are now evaluating the potential affect of proposed changes on the street network. The firm will return this spring to present their findings to UCI, which will publish them in an upcoming newsletter.
