Bellaire Native Landscape Garden Project

Project team

Head: West Park Community Coalition, Inc.

Partners: South Point, Men of Integrity

Project description and goals

The project intends to turn a stretch of wooded area along the neighborhood’s main artery into a pedestrian-oriented greenspace and wildlife habitat.  Currently, the site exists as an impromptu path connecting the neighborhood fabric.  The goal is to both beautify and formalize the path, while creating a sustainable anchor from which further greening intitiatives can be extended.

Existing conditions

The four lots (019-17-024 thru 019-17-027) are along Bellaire Rd. and measure 18,360 sq. ft.  Lot ownership is mixed, with three lots owned by the Cleveland Land Bank, and the additional lot privately owned by a long-time community resident.  The project site is in a highly visible location, as it is situated along a heavily trafficked artery containing both cars and pedestrians. The site is slightly wooded, and its surface is grass-covered except for a worn pedestrian path that has been formed over the years.

Proposed interventions

Formalizing the path with edgings is a main component of the project.  Specifically, the path will be defined with various native plants, shrubs, and trees, with resting points being incorporated along the route as well. The plants chosen will be driven by the need for limited maintenance, as well as their capabilities of attracting various wildlife such as butterflies, birds, and bees.

Site maintenance

Maintenance will include debris removal and up-front duties related to the creation of the vegetated path.  Longer-term duties include mowing, weeding, and watering, with the latter being accomplished through hydrant access via a city-granted permit.  Schedules will be developed by the lead agency to coordinate the efforts between the neighbors.
