East 87th St. Peace Space

Project team

Head: Families of E. 87th St.

Project description and goals

The project proposes a pocket park made by the community for the community. The park will include landscaping and structural design that will afford the neighborhood a much needed place of relaxation and beauty, as well as provide a venue for organized gatherings. Other goals include a concerted effort for intergenerational involvement in the development, maintenance, and use of the pocket park.  In fact, over 80% of the residents along E. 87th have committed to the project’s development in some form.

Existing conditions E 87th lot

The current lot is located at 2197 E. 87th St. (parcel 119-31-049), and is a former residential space measuring 9,075 sq. ft. There is no current landscaping other than grass, weeds, and sand; yet there are two existing trees on the space’s back edge. Also, the lot is centrally located, with the area proximal to both E. 97th and E. 100th, with the latter comprising two of Fairfax’s Model Blocks.

Proposed interventions

Interventions include the planting of vegetation, including three flowering trees (to attract wildlife), wildflowers (to attract butterflies and other insects), and shrubs (to define the park’s space).  Moreover, the type of vegetation will be chosen depending on ability to be maintained with low maintenance and a limited amount of watering.  Structural amenities will include seating and picnic tables, as well as solar lighting so as to both enhance the park and discourage illegal activity.

Site maintenance

Maintenance involves preparing the grounds for planting and debris removal. Ongoing duties include pruning the shrubs and weeding.  Duties will be divided up among residents using a quarterly schedule. Volunteers will also be actively solicited from nearby churches.
