Edna Side Lot Expansion

Project team

Head: Dianne Krnc and Diane Stimely

Project description and goals

The project involves the partnership of two neighbors who will be stewarding the land in between them.  The goals include beautifying a piece of the neighborhood, while enriching not only the neighbors’ properties, but their friendship as well.

Existing conditions

The St. Clair/Superior parcel (104-15-136) is part of the City Land Bank, and is approximately 33 X 166 ft. in scale.  Both neighbors have been maintaining the lot for 5 years. There are two trees currently existing on the site: a Sumac, and a Paper Mulberry.

Proposed interventions

Interventions include land grading and top soil placement, as well as a trimming of the trees.  After soil prep, the project managers will be seeding for grass and native plants, with the latter focused on those plantings accommodating bees and butterflies.  Also, small trees will be planted which can house squirrel and bird feeders.  A fence will be constructed around the perimeter as well.

Site maintenance

Maintenance involves lawn-mowing every other week, with weeding and plant manicuring being done throughout the course of the season.  Composting of the “plant residue” will be administered on-site, and water is available at each of the neighbor’s houses.  Scheduling will be unnecessary, as the land will be taken care of through the project managers’ ongoing commitment to the neighborhood.
