Friends of W. 47th St. Garden

Project description and goals

A community garden is proposed to give greater access to healthy eating and greenspace to those in the neighborhood.  The goal includes investing in the quality of life for those in the neighborhood through nutrition, exercise, and companionship.

 Existing conditions

The 3,960 sq. ft. site (002-35-121) is located W. 47th St in the Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. The site is in a residential area, and is in proximity to each of the gardeners in the group. Metals’ testing has been done, indicating medium-lead levels.

 Proposed interventions

Raised beds will be created, with clean fill and compost providing a base for the growth of fruits, herbs, and vegetables.  Where vegetation isn’t, mulch and/or wood chips will be laid to provide safe footing as well as lead abatement through phytostabilization.  Rain barrels will be installed on site, and a small shed built to house garden tools and—in season—a compost bin.

 Site maintenance

Maintenance will include debris removal and up-front duties related to the creation of the garden itself.  Longer-term duties include garden maintenance, especially weeding, seeding, and harvesting.  Schedules will be developed to coordinate the efforts between the neighbors.  Watering will be provided by a nearby fire hydrant, as well as the rain barrels.
