The Kosciuszko Ave Beautification Project

The Kosciuszko Ave Beautification Project

Project team

Head: Curtis B. Banks

Partners: The Saint Claire Superior Development Corporation

Project description and goals

The project’s intent is to transform two highly visible lots into a community green space and garden.

Existing conditions

The current site is on two parcels of land totaling 11,445 square feet. The vacant lots are conjoining and sit east of 8305 Kosciuszko Ave in the Saint Claire/Superior neighborhood. The land is next to the new Woodrow Wilson K-8 School that is currently under construction. The neighborhood will benefit from its community members working together to keep the place in which they live clean and beautiful.

Proposed interventions

Debris from dumping will be removed along with diseased and dead trees from the tree line near the rear property. The land will be graded and shallow debris, like concrete blocks, from the building that once stood on the lot, will be removed. Once the land is graded new grass and shrubs will be planted. A fence will be erected to prevent future dumping on the site. A walkway and community garden will also be part of the project. There will be off-street parking available for approximately 3 to 4 automobiles and the curb and tree lawn will be repaired or replaced where needed.

Site maintenance

The project teams have discussed hiring a contractor to help with heavy-duty work; however, the group intends to do as much of the labor as they are physically able. The required mowing and weeding will be done by the project team on a weekly basis.
