Mill Creek Falls Family Park Extension

Project team

Head: The Connecticut Block Club

Partners: The Warner Turney Neighborhood Organization (WTNO), Slavic Village Development (SVD)

Project description and goals

The project proposes the development of a pocket park so as to compliment an existing neighborhood park that sits adjacent to the lot in question.  The goal is to further diversify the natural environment of the Slavic Village neighborhood, while creating a node of community green space that can act as an anchor in the area’s sustainable resurgence.

Existing conditions

The parcel (#134-20-051) is a former residential lot which measures 6,930 sq. ft., and is besides the Tot Lot Park.  The grass-covered lot has a residence on its other side.

Proposed interventions

The pocket park intervention includes the creation of a walking path, with the implementation of seating to further give form to the public space.  Plantings will also take place, and include a few small trees, and native flowers and plants.  The long-term goal is to weave the pocket park into the out-dated Tot Park that is currently being re-designed with the use of a landscape architect.

Site maintenance

Mowing will be provided by SVD, which is responsible for a number of lots in the neighborhood.  Additional work beyond mowing, such as gardening and other manicuring tasks, will be provided by block club members. As for watering, the block club will seek City permission for access to two nearby hydrants.
