Rockefeller Park Towers Garden
Project team
Head: Rockefeller Park Apartments Limited Partnership
Partners: the Tenant Council Association of the Rockefeller Park Apartments
Project description and goals
A series of vacant lots behind a senior housing complex will be re-utilized into a greenspace and garden, providing for a much-needed recreational and relaxation space for the residents, as well as a potential food source in an area where access to healthy produce is limited. Goals include beautification of vacancy and community strengthening, as well various green efforts including local food production and storm water retention. The green efforts supplement the current Green HUD Renovation of the complex under the Mark-to-Market Program.
Existing conditions
The E. 96th site sits rear of the Rockefeller apartments, and next to the resident parking lot. In total, the four parcels (107-21-090 to 107-21-093) measure 15, 606 sq. ft., with the majority of its surface covered with shrubbery, weeds, and debris. Existing landscape, though, gives the site potential as wildlife habitat. Specifically, a series of mature trees cover the site, providing for a nice shade from the canopy.
Proposed interventions
The site will be divided functionally into sections, with areas dedicated to food production, recreation, landscaping/beautification, relaxation, and water retention. The garden plots will line the rear of the site, with fill providing for a fertile foundation. Adjacent to the garden—and just off the rear of the complex—a patio will be developed, complete with tables, benches, and a grilling area. Beside the patio a horseshoe pit will provide a recreational amenity, creating an opportunity for the residents to remain active. As well, water retention basins will edge the space from the nearby parking lot. Specifically, a bio-filtration swale filled with high-water plants will absorb much of the run-off from the pavement.
Site maintenance
Maintenance will be provided by the Rockefeller Park Apartments volunteers and staff. Gardening will be provided by residents. Water will be made available through the installation of two spickets on the side of the apartment complex.
